Pure Tone Audiometry
It is a behavioral test used to measure hearing sensitivity. The patient is seated in a sound treated room with headphones and is instructed to respond to a series of tones .The results are plotted on a graph (Audiogram) If hearing loss is there , it determines the type the degree of deafness.
It is an objective test measuring the status of the middle ear and reflexes of the auditory muscle. A probe is placed in the ear canal via a headset and measuring commences automatically. The preprogrammed course of the measurement requires no further adjusting or interfering The results (Tympanogram) The results are objective and independent from the patients participation. The tympanogram is the graphic representation of the air pressure changes , relative compliance and impedance of the tympano ossicular sytem . Helps in determining • If there is fluid in the middle ear • Whether the eardrum and bones of hearing are functioning normally.

OTOACOUSTIC EMISSIONS (OAE TEST)
The OAE test is often part of a newborn hearing screening program. Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are sounds given off by the inner ear when the cochlea is stimulated by a sound causing the outer hair cells to vibrate. This vibration can be measured with a small probe inserted into the ear canal.
AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSE (ABR)
The second test is called the auditory brainstem response or ABR. For this test three small stickers called “electrodes” will be placed on your child’s head and behind the ears and connected to a neuro audio screen device. Sounds are played to the baby’s ears. The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test measures the child’s hearing nerve response to different sounds and can identify babies who have a hearing loss.The two tests can be used separately or together. In some hospitals, babies are first screened using OAEs. Babies who do not pass on the first OAE test can be given a second test using the ABR
PRE SCHOOL HEARING SCREENING
Screening for hearing loss in preschoolers (ages 3-5 years) is important . It can be temporary or permanent. Temporary hearing loss can be because of wax, infections of the ear and can be managed. Ear surgery may be able to restore or significantly improve hearing in some cases Hearing loss at this age may interfere with speech and communication, language development, and school performance.
Pure tone audiometry (PTA)
A pure tone audiometry is tried in a sound proof room at first. As it relies on a feedback button and,it is often difficult and not practical for this age group, conditioned play audiometry is performed.
Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA)
Conditioned play audiometry allows an audiologist to test the hearing of very young toddlers and preschoolers. CPA uses behavioral conditioning for kids to respond to sounds. There are two parts of CPA: conditioning and screening.
The audiologist conditions the child for a game. A tone is played and the child is given a toy or a block and is asked to place the toy in a basket every time a beep is heard. Once the child understands the game, screening can begin.
For screening, the headphones are placed on the ears of the child. The test is repeated and the the intensity of the sound is decreased until the child’s minimum hearing threshold is achieved. Likewise the child is conditioned to place a ring over a cone when he hears the beep. Different frequencies and intensities are used till satisfactory data is collected to report either a pass or a fail result. Those in the pass group are presumed to have no hearing loss. Those who fail take the test at an interval again and may also need follow-up care from other professionals.
